LIVE ELECTION UPDATE Voters Keep State Name, Approve Bond Questions

Rhode Islanders overwhelming rejected a proposal to eliminate “plantations” from the state name while approving three bond questions by large majorities.

As a result of the vote, the state now is authorized to obtain the following bonds: $78 million for building construction and renovations at the University of Rhode Island and Rhode Island College, $84.7 million for improvements to the state’s roads, bridges, and highways, and $14.7 million for the purchase of open space land.

Below are the questions and the vote totals:

Question 1 – State name change: YES 22.1 percent; NO 77.9 percent
Question 2 – $78 million for building bonds: YES 55.2 percent; NO 44.8 percent
Question 3 – $84.7 million for transportation bonds: YES 73.1 percent; NO 26.9 percent
Question 4 – $14.7 million for open space: YES 64.6 percent; NO 35.4 percent
