Kilmartin Would Create Environmental ‘Strike Force’
Monday, September 06, 2010
Attorney General candidate Peter Kilmartin would create an environmental crimes “strike force,” if he is elected.
“As a native Rhode Islander, I take great pride in our shoreline and the beautiful landscape that we all enjoy,” Kilmartin said. “In an effort to further protect our environment from harm, I will create an Environmental Strike Force as Attorney General.”
The environmental strike force would handle investigations and prosecutions against people and companies that improperly dispose of hazardous waste, cause dangerous environmental conditions, or break federal clean air and clean water laws.

“As Attorney General, I will prosecute those who jeopardize our environment and work diligently to conserve our state's natural beauty for future generations to enjoy,” said Kilmartin. “In addition, I will use the bully pulpit of the office to advocate for federal grants to bolster efforts in our state to maintain Rhode Island’s natural beauty and that make it an international tourist attraction.”
His campaign claimed Kilmartin is the only AG candidate with a “proven record” on protecting the environment, pointing to a law he helped pass this year that gave the Attorney General the power to enforce conservation easements and other similar restrictions in Superior Court.
Kilmartin also proposed a law that would stop out-of-state companies from dumping waste at the state landfill. The law would have imposed a $50,000 fine for each violation.
