Having Said That by John DePetro

Since this installment of HST comes to you in the midst of a relentless heat wave and it is now mid-July, thought I would keep things light and breezy this week. (Although AG Patrick Lynch announced this week he’s getting out of the race for Governor and HST will have more to say about that next week.)

● As for the 2010 election season overall, it seems the "season of anger" has materialized as expected. Nothing like a spring flood, sustained high unemployment and a state Legislature which left us only with fireworks and a new car tax, to get the folks of Little Rhody really angry. As the record breaking number of candidates launching campaigns would indicate, the public is not only angry, they are restless and engaged. Don't expect the typically quiet news month of August this year. Many primary battles will be raging out there and the bloodshed will surely follow.

● While I give Channel 12 credit for staging the first major congressional debate the other night, the format was less than desirable. It is tough for four Democrats all running for the same office to disagree on many things, and the format did not allow interaction among the candidates.

● I think it would be worth a flood every March if we could have more summer weather like we have been having. Just bring down the humidity a few notches.

● The best show on TV returns in two weeks: Mad Men.

● The Obama White House is beginning to resemble the scene in "Titanic" when the first lifeboats are floating away from the ship.

● I have already swam in the ocean four times this summer and it is only mid-July. That is four times more than I went in all last year.

● No truth to the rumor that season 3 of "Jersey Shore" will be filmed in Notte Park in North Providence. Entitle it,  Gym, Tan, and Money Launderin’.

● Curt Schilling might move his company to Rhode Island. Yeah, and Bob Kraft might move the Patriots here too. Sorry, but I have seen this movie.

● At least we got the "America's Got Talent" cup finals for Newport.

● Good thing they race on the ocean in Newport because there is still no place to park on the street.

● Has anyone seen Senator Sheldon Whitehouse this summer? I guess when you were "bred" for office but have a 31% approval rating, you don't exactly rush out to meet the masses in local sweaty town halls and you go sulk and take the summer off.

● When do the good summer movies come out?

● I was wrong about the new fireworks law in Rhode Island. Cookouts are much better with a nice pyro display at dusk.

● Newport 2nd beach is still the best beach in Rhode Island, not counting the beach on Block Island.

● Having said that, there is no place like Rhode Island in the summer.

Glad Mr. DePetro is enjoying the weather as thousands of Rhode islanders are still suffering from the devastating aftermath of the March flooding.

Tom Martin

Glad you are back - love the attitude!

Patty Martucci

I don't think there is anything funny or worthwhile about the flooding in March.

This isn't a column, it's bullet points.
