Having Said That by John DePetro

Last week I spoke at a rally at the Rhode Island State House, protesting the decision by Speaker Gordon Fox to deny a hearing on illegal immigration in Rhode Island. While speaking at the rally, I praised Governor Carcieri and his 2008 “Executive Order,” which has been an effective deterrent against those living illegally in Rhode Island. I used a common metaphor and said the executive order “was like shining a light on cockroaches, which then scatter.” The Providence Journal is now reporting “DePetro called illegals cockroaches.” Well, that is obviously not what I said, and I have heard law enforcement use that metaphor when they step up their efforts in a high crime area, and drug dealers and criminals “scatter like cockroaches.” This is another example of a biased media which chooses to hear what they want to hear, and take things out of context.
  • The U.S. Attorney may now begin an investigation into the pension board in West Warwick, which would be the 3rd federal probe this year (Central Falls and North Providence). 3 down, 36 cities and town in Rhode Island to go!
  • Team Obama is finding out how tough it is to “spin” an oil leak. You can spin job numbers, inflation numbers, and education numbers, but there is no way to spin oil washing up on the shore of the Gulf coast.
  • There are strong indicators that Attorney General Patrick Lynch is having second thoughts about a run for governor.
  • The TV networks are beginning to pick up on the theme of illegal immigration for some of the new shows next season. Some of the new shows:
  • “South American Idol”
  • “Desperate Houseboys”
  • “Everybody Loves Ramondo”
  • “Green Card Acres”
  • “Support...All my children”
  • “Sex in the sanctuary City”
  • The budget released by the House finance committee last week at the Rhode Island State House was $100 million off the mark before the ink was dry. What private company would ever hire these buffoons?
  • There is going to be a “Providence style” week? A full week? How many times can you watch models wearing Ed Hardy shirts with baseball caps walk down a runway?
  • Anyone planning on going to see “Jersey Boys” at the PPAC is warned. The music is great, but the language is not for kids. Very uncomfortable for me with my 10 year-old.
  • Speaking of kids, baseball scouts in New England are saying Zach Kapstein of Tiverton high school is the real deal.
  • Something tells me this will be the “summer of the oil spill” at the Obama White House.
  • Having Said That, there is no place in the summer like Rhode Island.
  • John DePetro can be heard weekdays from 6am till 10am on WPRO.
