Guest MINDSETTER™ Sean Gately: Why I’m Running for State Senate

Monday, July 16, 2012

This year I am stepping forward again to ask the voters of to elect me to Senate District 26 seat in Cranston. In 2010 I was outspent 5 to 1 and came up only 152 short - in 2012 I think the voters of my district are ready for a change. My fellow homeowners and taxpayers in Cranston have watched our taxes skyrocket, our home values fall dramatically, while watching our retirement and education savings for our children go up in smoke.

The special interests have financed their handpicked replacement for the retiring Senator Lanzi with all the money he can spend. For the past 10 years his cronies have controlled the vote of the District 26 seat and that has resulted in expansion of the car tax, record unemployment, rankings as the worst place to do business in America and attempts to unionize day care workers. This seat it was one of the 3 deciding, last minute back room deal votes from Cranston in the Senate last year in favor of Binding Arbitration legislation that would drive us over the cliff to bankruptcy. These types of irresponsible votes have led to unfunded liabilities in excess of $350,000,000.00 in Cranston alone. Without real municipal pension reform and unfunded mandate relief, Cranston will face up to a onetime 8% increase in property taxes in 2014.

All is not lost, we will bring our City and our State back to economic prosperity and security, and I look forward to sharing that message of hope with the voters of District 26 over the next weeks and months. If elected I promise to work just as hard for you as your Senator as I have as your candidate. I am the only Pro-Business, Pro-Taxpayer candidate in this race and it is time to have a voice for your interests and not special interest in the District 26 seat.

I pledge to you that I will never vote to increase your taxes, stop binding arbitration legislation and unsustainable perpetual contracts, remove unfunded mandates and support municipal pension reform that will save everyone’s retirement savings.

Let's send a message to the special interests this November. Elections and the voters are not for sale. They must be earned one citizen at a time.

Sean P. Gately is a Republican candidate for State Senate in District 26.
