Harry Winthrop, former Newport Mayor, has announced his candidacy for the Newport City Council At-Large.
“Newport needs leaders who have the vision to get the City of Newport on track to make us a 12-month city, with quality, high paying jobs and an infrastructure that will allow us to compete to bring tech and green jobs to our city,” Winthrop said.
Winthrop was elected to the Newport City Council in 1990 and served terms from 1990 to 1993 and 1995 as well as from 2011 to 2012.

About his candidacy, Winthrop said "“I intend to secure the funding for the re-alignment of the Newport Pell Bridge ramps, which is the first step in the redevelopment of Newport’s North End. We must also acquire the Newport Naval Hospital property and work closely with residents, developers and neighbors regarding the development of this property.”
He added “we must finish the Small Business Incubation Center at Sheffield School and begin moving businesses in asap. I will work to update Newport’s strategic plan which hasn’t been updated since 2013 and I believe that we should relocate the Visitors Center to the North End and work with residents, developers and neighbors for a better re-use of this property."
