Don Roach: The Politically Correct Always Try To Tell Us What Jesus Would Do
Thursday, March 10, 2016
I don’t often respond to other GoLocal columnists but I do believe that Russ Moore’s piece on Mount Saint Charles refusal to accept transgender students is worth a comment (or ten). In 2016 America, it’s politically correct to be everything except a person holding religious beliefs.
I can already hear some of you grumbling like a two year who refuses to take a bath (ever!), but hear me out on this one. Russ Moore essentially chided Mount Saint Charles (MSC hereafter) for their stance on transgender students. The politically correct among us will say, “gender identity should not be a reason to keep a student out of a school.” Why? Because in 2016 everything is ok, and as long as it doesn’t hurt someone else, it’s fine.
Moore writes that “the policy discriminates and excludes” while MSC has stated that the reason they are not accepting transgender students is due to the fact that they do not believe they have the adequate facilities to support a transgender student. For folks like Moore and other politically correct in our community, that equates to discrimination and exclusion.

In 2016, I feel like Jesus is often called in as like the go-to whenever someone wants to justify something. It’s as if Jesus would be ok with every single cultural shift that has occurred since women received the right to vote in 1920. I tend to believe that based on the words we’ve recorded as His, that’s not likely.
And that’s where I think we as a country are erring. We’re accepting of nearly everything except for a person, group, or organization that holds a religious belief counter to the “mainstream." That’s a very dangerous proposition because the next step is sanctioning people for holding different beliefs simply because they run counter to the majority.
While MSC is not refusing transgender students on religious grounds by all accounts, what concerns me about Moore and others is a desire to connect Jesus with cultural shifts today. What would Jesus think about sexting? Would he be ok with the number of divorces we have in America? Is marijuana ok as a recreational drug? All of these issues I feel the politically correct try to take one word from Jesus in the Bible and run to justify their position.
Moore does not mention the times Jesus spoke to the same riffraff (paraphrased) and told them to “go and sin no more.” That statement alone requires that the a) hearer understands what it means to sin and b) has the power to choose a different path. That’s a different perspective than the “acceptance” and “tolerance." However, this doesn’t fit the narrative many politically correct adherents want to portray.
My point is, if you wish to invoke Jesus into the political drama of the day, don’t simply take a couple quotes here and there to feel justified. Further, stop calling people who disagree bigoted and discriminatory. It implies that reasonable people are not allowed to hold opinions that run counter to the political correct zone without being labeled as something not so nice.
And would Jesus really support that?
