Don Roach: Newt Gingrich – Your Next U.S. President

Wednesday, November 30, 2011

Ladies and gentlemen, I’d like to present to you the next President of the United States – Newt Gingrich.

We’re about a year away and I’m going to go out on a limb and say that not only will Newt Gingrich win the Republican nomination but in an upset he will defeat President Obama. Several months ago, Gingrich was just about dead in the water after numerous staff quit his campaign. Gingrich was never known for his amicability but he has been an able debater over the last few months presenting a clear vision in a measured tone.

It’s important to note that over the last several months many would-be front runners have come and gone…Michelle Bachmann, Rick Perry, & now Herman Cain has floundered amidst sexual harassment and affair allegations. That has led to the unlikely (and some say unsustainable) rise of Newt Gingrich as the primary competitor to Mitt Romney.

Newt has staying power unlike former front runners

Gingrich has something that most of the aforementioned front runners, other than Romney, don’t – dirty old laundry. What I mean is Gingrich’s personal indiscretions, numerous ethics charges, and hypocritical attacks on former President Clinton have been well documented and analyzed ad nauseum.

And that’s a good thing. Why?

Because we know thing about Gingrich, he isn’t perfect but he’s very resilient and not to be so cliché but isn’t that America, imperfect yet extremely resilient? Some believe that his past will be his undoing as a front runner, however, if we look at former president Clinton and even others who have been mired in scandal – if they handle it with accountability the American people are apt to forgive and forget. If you want an example of how not to handle scandal see Herman Cain.

Gingrich is a much more seasoned politician and I fully expect him to meet those attacks with replies befitting of someone we’d want to call President.

Gingrich has his pulse on center right issues

Remember the old contract with America? Well Gingrich has the new 21st Century Contract with America. This contract has four main points:

Shift America back to job creation, prosperity, freedom, and safety.

Day One Executive Orders – get rid of ‘czar’ positions, stop AG immigration lawsuits, don’t force healthcare workers to perform procedures they find morally or ethically objectionable.

Training program for transition teams to lead the shift back to limited government.

System of citizen involvement to engage and sustain grassroots support.

The first two points have been developed whereas points three and four still need work. Indeed Gingrich states on his site that three and four will be developed over the course of the campaign. So how’s this center right?

Well, the country is looking for jobs. If there is one issue that nearly every American agrees on is the need for jobs. Ask the Tea Party & Occupy Movement members if America needs jobs and 100% of each group will answer in the affirmative. Also, many Americans believe that government has become too bloated and needs to be trimmed. Whereas those on the left feel Wall Street is THE problem many on the right and in the middle believe Government has become far too large.

Gingrich is going to be able to appeal to the far right and center because of his nuanced approach. Consider his recent revelations about immigration. He’s for a strict and somewhat cumbersome path to residency for illegal immigrants who meet certain requirements. That’s left of many on the right but probably slightly to the right of the average American.

It’s also a very good idea to shift left of conservatives on this issue. In order to win the presidency you need Hispanics and turning them off on this issue is suicide for Republicans if they don’t wish to negotiate on this issue. Gingrich, having spent his political career wheeling and dealing in the House of Representatives, has the experience and proven ability to ‘work a deal’ in Congress.

America needs Newt

One would think I’m on the Gingrich payroll (I’m not) but America needs Newt. Simply put, government has run amuck; we’ve come to a watershed moment in our history where 2012 will mark the beginning of the decline of American dominance or it will be the start of a new season of prosperity. This is not going to happen with Obama, not going to happen with a smooth-tongued but ill prepared president who does not have the solutions America needs.

You might think what I’m saying is crazy given Gingrich’s past. I can’t say that I’m 100 percent confident on this prediction, but I will say that after months of debating the issue, I believe that Gingrich is the man to lead America right now and in this time. His experience, ideas, and ability to present them to people make him the right fit for the numerous issues we’re facing. I expect it to be a difficult battle with both Romney and Obama, but in the end come November 2012 we’ll be speaking about president-elect Gingrich.

When it happens, you heard it here first. If I’m wrong, Travis Yowley, I’ll be the first to admit. Yet, I think Gingrich just might be the change we can finally believe in.
