Today, U.S. Congressman David Cicilline will be starting his Congressional Series for Seniors program.

He will focus on how Republican national budget will affect elderly Rhode Island citizens and describe the services that his office can do for seniors.

In a news release, Cicilline’s Congressional office said the budget would end Medicare guarantees for seniors and cut Medicaid support for seniors in nursing homes, disabled persons, and low-income children.

The budget also cuts funding for education, public safety, disease research and prevention, clean energy, and infrastructure while giving tax breaks to oil companies and companies that contract jobs overseas, according to Cicilline.

Cicilline voted against the budget, which passed the House late last week.

He said: “I voted against this Republican budget because it does not reflect our values. We must do better for our seniors and the middle class.” Speaking of the alternative Democratic budget, he said, “It keeps our commitments to America’s seniors instead of dismantling Medicare. And it invests in our nation’s future, helping small businesses create jobs and Make it in America.”

Cicilline’s Congressional Series for Seniors will begins today 2011 at the Parkview Manor Senior High in Woonsocket at 4:45 p.m. Another event will follow at the St. Germain Manor Senior Highrise in Woonsocket beginning at 6:00 p.m., with events continuing after tomorrow at other senior high-rises around the state.
