Congressman David Cicilline yesterday announced a new hire for his district office whose responsibilities will include serving as a liaison to the Portuguese community.

Cicilline also announced plans to tour several East Providence businesses today.

His new staffer, Tanya Santos, will be working with constituents who have issues or concerns with Social Security, Medicare, or Medicaid benefits. She also will serve as a “liaison” between Cicilline’s office and the Portuguese community in Rhode Island.

“Tanya’s knowledge of the community, especially the Portuguese community in Rhode Island, will assist the office in maintaining a strong connection to the local Portuguese community, which is the second largest population of the state with a heavy concentration in the First Congressional District,” Cicilline’s office said in a news release.

And, to reinforce the point, his office issued the news release announcing her appointment in both English and Portuguese.

Yesterday, Cicilline’s office also announced a tour through East Providence—one of the areas where there is a high concentration of Portuguese residents. His office said it would be the kickoff to his “Small Business, Main Street Walking Tour Series.” (Details below.)

Asked if Cicilline was worried about his popularity among East Providence voters, spokeswoman Jessica Kershaw said East Providence was simply chosen because of its proximity to his home on the East Side of Providence.
