Gov. Don Carcieri is urging voters to see who public-sector unions are supporting—and do the opposite.

“My rule of thumb first of all is start seeing who the unions are endorsing—don’t vote for that person,” Carcieri said during an interview on the Dan Yorke show on 630 WPRO, a GoLocalProv media partner. “All your listeners—when you see who all the public sector unions, including the teachers, are endorsing, do not support that person.”

His comments came the day after the Rhode Island chapter of the NEA endorsed independent candidate for governor Lincoln Chafee.

“The National Education Association Rhode Island stands ready to help elect Linc Chafee. We believe that Linc Chafee understands the critical role that public education at all levels plays in our state. Linc Chafee is an experienced leader we can trust,” said Bob Walsh, the executive director of the organization.

“We will work to ensure that our more than 11,500 members understand the stakes of the upcoming election, and that they have the resources they need to make an informed decision and participate fully in the process,” Walsh added.

Carcieri said he would not support Chafee. “I would not support him, no absolutely,” the governor said. “I think it would be a terrible mistake.”
