Loughlin noted that unemployment has nearly doubled -- from 7.5% to 14.5% -- during Cicilline's tenure as mayor.

"If he's going to take credit for the good things that have happened during his tenure, he deserves to take heat for the disasters that have been the hallmark of his administration," said Loughlin.

“Providence is like a mini-Washington, DC with irresponsible spending, tax increases, and big-spending government,” Loughlin added. “When Rhode Islanders need jobs, want smaller government and lower spending, we can’t afford to send David Cicilline to Washington.”

Conservative Group Calls for School Choice

The Rhode Island Clean Slate campaign announced its policy for improving public education options for students in failing school districts.

The plan will remove geographic restrictions on families' ability to enroll their children in successful public schools, provide financial incentive for these school districts to accept students who want to attend their schools, and introduce a streamlined application and approval process for alternative public schools -- like charter and mayoral schools -- to maintain the integrity of their educational programs.

“No student should be forced to languish in a failing school while we wait for our new multi-year funding reform plan to take effect," said RI Clean Slate Campaign Chairman Mike Stenhouse. "Every year that a child spends in a failing school is a year that the child will never get back and that harm will remain for a lifetime."

Taylor Expands Campaign Team

Republican candidate for Secretary of State Catherine Taylor announced she had expanded her campaign staff.

Chris Mottola, whose previous clients include then-U.S. Senator Lincoln Chafee and NY Governor George Pataki, has been named her political media consultant.

“I am pleased to be working with this talented and dynamic team,” said Taylor. “The depth of knowledge and energy that this group of individuals brings to the table is a great asset."

Other campaign staff include Katherine Hypolite, a 2008 Providence College grad, as Director of Communications and Field Outreach, Campaign Manager David Kang, Finance Director Susan Kaplan, Treasurer Kathy Reavis, and Assistant Treasurer James Nagle.
