Cianci to Tell His Side of the Story in New Memoir

Friday, December 17, 2010

Former Providence Mayor Buddy Cianci is set to release a memoir next spring, telling his side of the story from his many years as one of the longest-serving urban mayors in the country—and his experience as a prosecutor before he got elected.

Politics and Pasta: How I Prosecuted Mobsters, Rebuilt a Dying City, Advised a President, Dined with Sinatra, Spent Five Years in a Federally Funded Gated Community, and Lived to Tell the Tale, is set to be released on March 15. The book is co-authored with New York Times best-selling author David Fisher. It is being published by Thomas Dunne Books.

“It’s a book that I hope people will enjoy and it gives some of my experiences as mayor and my life,” said Cianci, now a talk show host on 630 WPRO, a GoLocalProv media partner. “There’s a lot of fun parts to the book. There’s a lot of humorous incidents in my life and some not so humorous.”

Cianci said the book gives his account of the events—including a federal indictment—that led to his departure from office in 2002. But he said it also goes into “a lot more interesting stuff” as well, including his first election as Providence Mayor in 1974 and his early-career experiences as a prosecutor.

Besides telling some good stories, Cianci said he hopes readers take away some lessons from the book.

He predicts that readers will be most surprised by his candor. “I don’t read my own press releases—you know what I mean?” Cianci said.
