BREAKING: Letter Warns State Will Defund ProCAP by End of Year

Thursday, November 17, 2011

The state will defund the Providence Community Action Program (ProCAP) at the end of the year if the organization does not replace the organization’s longtime Executive Director Frank Corbishley immediately; according to a letter sent to the organization’s board of directors by chairman and City Council President Michael Solomon.

Solomon has called an emergency meeting of the board of directors –its second emergency meeting in less than a month- for Wednesday Nov. 23 in an attempt to have Corbishley removed.

In the letter, Solomon said more than $10 million in funding is at risk. He called the state’s announcement “a grave reminder that unless we act on our fiduciary duty as board members, this important agency faces an unprecedented funding crisis.”

The letter continues: “On Wednesday, the choice is clear. Either we vote to maintain the status quo and ProCAP will lose its funding and shut its doors or we vote for a new direction and save ProCAP. My vote is to save ProCAP and I hope yours will be too.”

On Tuesday, Mayor Angel Taveras said an independent assessment revealed “staggering mismanagement” at ProCAP and urged Corbishley to resign. Taveras also replaced several ProCAP board members who were viewed as supporters of Corbishley, including Councilman Nick Narducci.
