Bill Would Give Town Council Role in Teacher Contracts

Wednesday, May 12, 2010

A bill that would give town councils a role in negotiating teacher contracts will come before a state Senate Committee on Education hearing today.

The bill, which is sponsored by Sen. William A. Walaska, a Democrat from Warwick, would include town or city council representatives in contract negotiations between school committees and teacher unions.

“For all the great work they do, school committees sometimes operate in a vacuum, not directly involved in the overall budgetary concerns of a community and sometimes out of sync with the ability of a community to pay,” Walaska said. “I think it would help, overall, if a member of the city or town council was involved in the one activity that results in the costliest part of any school budget – teacher contracts.”
