Do You Favor the Elimination of the Master Lever for Party Voting

  •     156 vote - Yes, the Master Lever should be eliminated by the General Assembly
  •     46 vote - No, voters ought to have the choice

Ken Block of Moderate Party

Ken Block, founder of the RI Moderate Party and who garnered single digit support as a candidate for Governor in 2010, has lead the fight to end the master lever.  According to the Moderate Party's:

It's time to get rid of single-lever party voting. Rhode Island is one of very few states that still allows single-lever party voting. This is an outdated system that harkens back to the days when party bosses bullied voters into blindly voting for an entire party slate, without considering the merits of individual candidates or issues. Frankly, it is an insult to the intelligence and independence of Rhode Island voters, yet the Democratic Party fights tooth and nail to keep it. The Moderate Party will lead the charge to get rid of this relic of Single Party Rule.

Yes, get rid of it, let people have to think before they vote!

The only thing the master lever has given this state is a dead last ranking in practically every category, this speaks volumes to the party that has benefited from this practice. The same holds true for corrupt arbitrary redistricting and now the latest cry for the institution of early voting which is just another fraudulent tool to ensure one party dominance. The politicians that continually rail to ad nauseam about fairness and equality should recognize the unfairness and inequality of all of the above.
The state of this state speaks for itself. For past 70 years,Democratic rule has gotten us here to this miserable economy..It's time to make all things equal,It's time to abolish the master lever and all other obstacles including newly proposed ones! When there is balance at the ballot box perhaps then maybe we can balance our books.

I agree the "master lever" should go. I know as a Board of Elections employee hired to help people vote in nursing homes, it was widely misunderstood by those voters.
By the way, to the extent that Rhde Island is "misruled" blaming it all on the Democrats is total nonsense. Any misrule is entirely bipartisan, we have not had a Democratic Governor for 18 years, and the GOP Governors (now plus Chafee) appointed almost all the folks that actually ran all the state agencies, not the least of which was the EDC that gave us Carcieri's 38 Studios guarantee.

Barry,

The only problem with your post is that the real power is in the General Assembly, and that power is concentrated in the leadership.

Consider:

The GA can override any Governor's veto.

Dissent with the GA Democratic leadership is strictly prohibited -- just ask any Republican or non-team-playing Democrat legislator.
