Clean Water Action Endorses Taveras

Monday, August 23, 2010

A national 1.2 million-member environmental group, Clean Water Action, has endorsed Angel Taveras for mayor of Providence, his campaign announced today.

“We are proud to announce our endorsement of Angel Taveras for Mayor of Providence,” said Clean Water Action’s Rhode Island Director, Sheila Dormody. “Angel’s five-point environmental program focuses on reducing Providence’s carbon footprint and positioning Providence as a leader in the rapidly growing green economy. These measures are just what our capitol city needs to move forward. We look forward to working with him when he is elected to help him implement his ambitious plan.”

Taveras promised to make Providence an “international leader” in environmental stewardship, saying global issues like energy independence and global warming were connected to local issues like the city budget and energy and food costs for families.

“I look forward to bringing the city's environmental and renewable energy activists into City Hall with me so that we can work together to make the dream of a clean energy economy a reality,” Taveras said. “I am deeply committed to passing this world on to our children cleaner and safer than we found it.”

Whose water is Angel really carrying?

National groups have long supported Taveras. The people of Providence will decide Angel's political fate. And judging by the numbers -- his and others -- he'd best get his ambulance chasing creds in order.

This just in: Latino Public Radio's poll of 1000 individuals taken between August 18 and 22 in Providence's Latino community has Angel at 35% -- DOWN from 40.5% on August 5.

John Lombardi is at 33% among surveyed Latinos -- UP from a previous 31%. That's a two-point spread, folks.

The same poll shows citywide results: Lombardi at 37.5% -- UP by 4.5%, Taveras at 28%, up 2%. In other words, Lombardi shows twice as large a gain.

As for poor Stevie "Budget Buster" Costantino, he's at 26% among Latinos (7 points behind Lombardi) and 32% citywide -- and that's after three weeks of heavy television buys.

Can you say "Mayor Lombardi"?

Providence, the leadership you've needed for so long is just around the corner.

Dear "R. Parsons" -

While we all know that you are a Lombardi communications operative, I will address your points as if you were actually a concerned citizen.

1. I have seen 4 polls from varied candidates. All 4 polls have Taveras beating Lombardi - even in his home district of Ward 13 - where I guess the people "know him" the best.

2. Lombardi's people have been trumpeting a poll that they have showing him in the lead for the past 6 weeks. Where is it? The reality is that there isn't one.

3. The "Latino Public Radio poll" is about as scientific as WPRO's poll which showed Chris Young leading the Mayor's race.

On September 14th, the voters will have their say. And, as they say, THAT is the only poll that matters!
