11 to Watch in 2011: Bob Walsh

Thursday, December 30, 2010

The National Education Association boss took out dissident Democrats from their General Assembly seats and bet the proverbial ranch supporting a former Republican and now Independent Lincoln Chafee for governor. Now, as a member of Chafee’s transition team, Walsh has become the voice of the public employee unions in the new administration.

Walsh won just about every political fight of the 2010 election cycle, but he enters 2011 under the cloud of scandal after one of his deputies was caught impersonating a state rep.

The former banker, Brown grad, and failed candidate for City Council and Congress is the man to watch in 2011. In a year when there is massive political movement to reform public education, improve test scores and develop a system more aligned with the jobs of the future – all eyes will be on Walsh. Will he be stonewalling or compromising?

Walsh will be one of the most intriguing of the 11 to watch in 2011.
