This past weekend GoLocalProv.com broke the story that Providence Police Chief Dean Esserman hosted a graduation party in which underage children consumed alcohol. Chief Esserman's tenure has been one of highs and lows. He is credited to stabilizing the department after a series of controversies. He has been successful at attracting critical federal grants. But. more recently Esserman has been the focal point of a range of controversies. One controversy related to his pension deal. The second, related to an incident in which he was recently suspended, and now the party at his home.

Should he remain the chief of the Providence Police Department? At a time in which the City has announced the layoffs of 78 officers, is the Department in need of both a commissioner of public safety (Steven Pare, former head of the RI State Police) and a police chief (Esserman).

Should the Chief meet a higher standard? Or, is the Chief getting special treatment?

Your turn: should Esserman step down?
