More snow is on the way this weekend... are you ready? Photo: Lydia Walshin.

After a couple of mild days with lots of melting of the snow from last weekend’s epic snowstorm, winter is returning to Rhode Island this weekend. A cold front has punched through the area and will continue to produce snow showers today that will bring us a light covering of snow.

Weekend storm update

Meanwhile a storm center should form on that front as it moves offshore. That should take place far enough out over the ocean so that we here in Rhode Island will see a glancing blow from the storm with light to moderate snow tonight and early tomorrow. Expected accumulations here look to be in the 3”-6” range. Totals should be greater the farther east you go, perhaps up to 4”-8” over Eastern Massachusetts and perhaps 10” or more over parts of Cape Cod and the Islands. Less snow accumulation is expected farther west through Connecticut and Western Massachusetts. The intensifying storm will drag very cold air into the region with readings in the low teens and single numbers Sunday night.

Again, I caution that since the storm has not yet formed any location nearer the coast could bring more snow to the area than now expected and conversely less snow would be expected from a storm location farther out to sea. Keep posted right here for any forecast changes.
