Voice of the Poor, Henry Shelton Dies at 86
Thursday, September 22, 2016
Henry Shelton, Rhode Island’s leading voice of the poor, has passed away.
In 1981, Shelton founded the George Wiley Center — an organization that incorporates the values that were central to the organization’s namesake -- "George Wiley's belief that by empowering people, social change is possible.”
Shelton, who was 86-years-old, was a recent feature of a column of departing Providence Journal columnist Ed Fitzpatrick. Shelton was a staple at the Rhode Island State House, as an organizer of protests, and the voice of the poor at the Public Utilities Commission fighting for the rights and respect of the oftentimes voiceless in Rhode Island.
