With back to school looming in New England, it's the perfect time to look at the 50 public, charter, and technical high schools that top the region for highest achievement.

Utlizing the assessment tools from US News & World Report's annual Best High Schools rankings, GoLocalProv has compiled the ultimate New England list of the best of the region. These Top 50 schools reveal the incredible diversity of size and location of those schools that are topping the rankings nationally.

Ranking high schools nationwide

US News compiles data on more than 21,000 public high schools and derives each school's ranking on two central features: how well each schools prepares its students for college and how many students display proficiency on their state's standardized assessment examinations. Rhode Island's top performers

Among New England's Top 50 High Schools, two schools from Rhode Island cracked the list--Barrington High School, which ranked #48 in New England, and Providence's Classical High School, which ranked #31.

To see all 50 of New England's Top Public High Schools and compare their performance on standardized state testing, college readiness, and student-teacher ratios, see the slides, below.

Note on academic indicators, below: As part of its assessment and ranking, US News creates a College Readiness Index score to reflect how many students take AP and IB exams, and how they perform (the maximum index score is 100). Math and English/reading proficiency scores indicate what percentage of students were at or above proficiency in testing in both subjects.
