Side of the Rhode: Who’s Hot and Who’s Not in RI Politics

Friday, May 06, 2011

Week in and week out GoLocalProv gives you a look at who is turning up their own heat in Rhode Island politics and who is cooling off quickly.

Who’s Hot

Jack McConnell -> You want to know why our leaders can’t get anything done in Washington? Because it takes years to get a perfectly qualified candidate his judgeship. Congratulations to McConnell (at right), whose two biggest flaws are that he’s a Democrat and he believes businesses should be held accountable. Shocking, right?

Brian Newberry -> Congrats Rep. Newberry. You now hold a leadership position in a party whose biggest accomplishment so far this year has been getting Atlas Shrugged to play on the big screen. Then again, the Republicans need some fresh blood if they hope to become at all relevant in this state.

Steven Pare -> It’s not at all gratifying to know that it took a Tim White exposé of a well-known scam in the city of Providence to get any visibility, but kudos to Commissioner Pare for committing to cracking down on fraudulent pensions. With the city struggling the way it is, it’s stuff like this that makes you shake your head.

David Cicilline -> Give credit where credit is due. The much-maligned Congressman’s "Make It In America Grant" actually appears to have some legs. For someone getting bashed on a daily basis back home, it is worth mentioning that Cicilline is one of the only freshman Democrats with a seat at the table in any important conversation happening in Washington right now.

Susan Sosnowski & Teresa Tanzi -> Excellent move to amend the good time laws for prisoners. We all know prison reform is a must and there are plenty of prisoners that deserve good behavior time, but if you’re a murderer or a child molester, you deserve to rot in jail for the duration of your sentence.

Frank Caprio -> Congrats to the former Democratic candidate for governor, who finally came out of hiding this week to take a job with Chatham Capital. Who knows what will happen with his political career, but Caprio is still young enough to go make a little money and resurrect himself down the line. Next time, of course, he should probably tell someone from the opposite party to shove it instead of his president.

President Obama -> Followed through on a pledge made two years ago. Look, we all know that he wasn’t the one in any danger Sunday night, but his administration will always be known as one that found and killed bin Laden.

Who’s Not

Bob Watson -> Ousted by the smallest coup in history, it was another rough week for Rep. Watson (at left). Of course, his party is in such turmoil that if two of his enemies are defeated in 2012, the Republicans will probably pass the torch (or joint) back to him.

Joe Trillo -> So this is how the new Minority Whip is going to do things. He’s going to run to the radio and call people names every time he doesn’t like someone. Totally classy. And you wonder why you didn’t have the votes to be Minority Leader.

Providence -> In addition to raising taxes and closing schools, the new administration says you can expect those oh-so-pleasant meter maids to be out in full force over the next year. You know, because quality of life doesn’t matter, right?

Medical Marijuana -> Something the governor can’t afford to take a “long pause” on. He needs to meet with other governors and figure out a plan to move forward as quickly as possible. Because the longer he waits, the more 3,500 patients in need of medical marijuana could suffer.

Marriage Equality RI -> What the heck is going on over at MERI? Two months ago, it seemed like they were well on their way to getting same sex marriage passed. Now their leadership has resigned, their spokesperson is gone, and half of the GLBT community is throwing them under the bus.

Osama bin Laden -> An obvious choice. Here’s hoping the death of one of the most heinous criminals in recent memory brings a little bit of closure to the thousands of families to who he brought so much grief.

McConnell will likely be unable to keep ideology out of his decisions.
I had no misgivings about Judge Thompson, for while it's likely she's liberal personally, she is not going to bring personal political views to work.
I had a lot of contact with her when she was a District Court judge and she was always totally professional.
McConnell has given so much money to one party over the last 10 years or so that it far exceeds what could be considered routine contributions.
I have seen McConnell speak on the ACLU show and he came across as a snake oil salesman trafficking in gross exaggeration for effect.
The Federal courts here have always been above board, but I think that has come to an end with this appointment.
McConnell will find a way to give a judicial imprimatur to every left wing cause that comes before him.

In re Cicilline:

Credit for WHAT?

David Cicilline will not create a single job for Rhode Island.

David Cicilline knows that this measure will go nowhere. But rather than spend his time and other resources in the effort to find viable alternatives, Cicilline chooses the big-time photo op.

David Cicilline is focused on one job in Rhode Island, and one job only: HIS OWN.

When this effort inevitably fails, David Cicilline will do what he always does: Blame someone else for his failure.

See this for what it is: David Cicilline at his posturing, lying, incompetent worst.

maybe mcconnell will have a few big cases early on that will be flipped by the supremes.
when his cases are overturned....true justice will prevail....

Test Account

Charles Drago enjoys copying and pasting his Rep. Cicilline attacks from one thread to another. Just mentioning it because it's hilarious and also pointless, unless his goal is to win an election for someone else next year. What about this year?

The man is our representative in Congress. We can either choose to support him in perhaps the one good piece of legislation he has a chance of passing in a GOP-controlled congress, or we can rip off our noses to spite our face.

Drago, sounds like you've got some "talking points" there by the by.

Another Cicilline surrogate checks in and apes his/her master in the process.

"Pointless" is as illogical and myopic an analysis of my post as anyone could imagine.

The point -- whoever you are -- is that David Cicilline must be driven from public life because he is incompetent and dishonorable. We do this by reminding one and all -- over and over again -- of the tragic truth regarding his tenure as mayor of Providence.

If this legislation passes, it will NOT be Cicilline who gets the job done. But said to say, it won't pass.

And David Cicilline knows it won't pass, but he's attached himself to it anyway because of its high profile nature.

I repeat: Rather than work on legislation with a chance to become law, David Cicilline went for the photo op.

The point, you nameless nabob, is to keep this man away from the public's collective throat and pocket.

David Cicilline presided over an unemployment nightmare in Providence. And now you want us to grant to him the benefit of our beleagured attention?

Just like your master, you hide from us (in your case, by assuming a pseudonym; why not identify yourself with Cicilline?) and throw bombs from the shadows -- like your Louis Prima and noel davis "identities."

And stop trying to make this about me or any other person who speaks the truth about David Cicilline. It's not working, whoever -- or whatever -- you are.

Jen Petersen

Charlie Drago, you really need a hobby.

Donn Roach

Cicilline on the hot list.

Oh, the shame, Dan.
