The new construction season for the Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) has officially begun, meaning that drivers should expect more signs and construction sites to start appearing on the roads.

“This time of year is especially busy for our Department,” said RIDOT Director Michael P. Lewis. “Since our full season began in earnest last Friday, more activity will be occurring within our roadway construction sites. We want to remind all motorists to be aware and drive with care.”

Many projects will be beginning this season, including resurfacing parts of Route 3 in Coventry and Route 116 in Smithfield, replacing sidewalks on the Chepachet River Bridge in Chepachet, and improving the Weekapaug Bridge in Westerly.

The Conant Street Bridge in Pawtucket and the Branch Avenue Bridge in Providence are both targeted for replacement, and repairs to the Cove Bridge in Portsmouth are planned as well.

There will also be improvements made to Waterfront Drive, Route 2, and Hope Street in Bristol. Interstate-95 is also going to be resurfaced in both directions in West Greenwich, East Greenwich, and West Warwick.
