RI Senator Behind Plan to End Homelessness in the U.S.
Wednesday, June 23, 2010
Each day, about 640,000 people in the United States have nowhere to spend the night.
Yesterday U.S. Senator Jack Reed, D-RI, said he thinks the country can bring that number a lot closer to zero.
Reed praised what he said was the first-ever “comprehensive strategy” by the federal government to end homelessness in the United States.

And now it has to be implemented.”
Today, the national Interagency Council on Homelessness released its strategy for preventing and ending homelessness. Reed is the author of a bill that requires that the council—which is made of up 19 federal agencies—develop the plan.
“The Obama Administration’s level of engagement on this issue from the top down has been unprecedented,” Reed added. “We need greater inter-agency coordination to prevent Americans from falling through the cracks and becoming homeless. And we must ensure that innovative, local homelessness prevention programs have the support they need.”
