Leaders from Rhode Island’s faith community will respond to this weekend’s vandalism at the Islamic School of Rhode Island in West Warwick at a press conference on Tuesday morning, February 17.

After a statement is issued by the school, other faith leaders will speak, including Rabbi Sarah Mack, President of the Board of Rabbis of Greater Rhode Island; Bishop Nicholas Knisely, Episcopal Bishop; Steve Alquist, Humanist Society; and the Rev. Dr. Don Anderson, Rhode Island State Council of Churches.

The pre-K to eighth grade school was vandalized with graffiti, including the phrase “Now this is a hate crime,” which was painted across the front door of the school. Obscenities were also spray painted around the building.

A statement was issued Monday by Senator Jack Reed regarding the incident. “I strongly condemn the vandalism of the Islamic School of Rhode Island,” said Reed.  “Our state was founded on religious freedom and we are strengthened by our diversity. There is no justification and no place for this type of intolerance and bigotry in our community. I urge anyone with information about the incident to contact the proper authorities.”

The school stated on their Facebook page that they are not “taking the incident lightly, but we do believe that this is the work of a small minded ignorant person.”

Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact the West Warwick Police Department at 401-821-4323.
