Rhode Island Tries Again for $75 Million in School Funds

Monday, May 24, 2010

A bid to get as much as $75 million in federal funds for local schools got the ringing endorsement of a state teacher union and every school district, Education Commissioner Deborah Gist and Gov. Don Carcieri announced today.

The funding would be provided through the Race to the Top program, which awards money to states based on improvements they make to their public schools.

“With virtually every school district and public charter school pledging support, we are well-positioned to move our agenda forward,” Carcieri said.

“Round Two of the Race to the Top has given us an opportunity to fine-tune our original application, sharpen our strategies, and more fully engage stakeholders and the public in the process,” Carcieri said. “As a result, we are submitting a much stronger application that reflects broader public input and collaboration."
