Rhode Islanders hate going to work more than the employees in any other state, according to an analysis by 24/7 Wall St.

Rhode Island is the #1 place where people hate going to work, according to an analysis by 24/7 Wall St. After Gallup released its latest poll, the 2013 State of the American Workplace Report, Rhode Island topped the list for actively disengaged employees with 21% in 2012. According to the report, actively disengaged workers are “more likely to steal from their companies, negatively influence their coworkers, miss workdays, and drive customers away.”

To compile the list of states where people hate going to work, 24/7 Wall St. reviewed the 10 states with the highest proportion of actively disengaged workers as well as emotional health and workplace satisfaction data–both based on reports from Gallup–along with annual average unemployment rates for 2012.

In addition to dubious honor of the top spot for states where people hate going to work, Rhode Island came in 6th to last for actively engaged employees with 27.7%. It also has the worst work environment, which can have an effect on engagement. Gallup found that less than a third of the country's workers were actively engaged in their jobs last year. Fifty percent or more of workers in 39 states are not engaged in their jobs, and in the remaining 11 states, the percent of workers who are not engaged is nearly 50%. There is evidence for a correlation between active disengagement in RI and the state's high unemployment rate of 10.4%, the 3rd highest in the country.

Gallup's employee engagement index–which categorizes workers as engaged, not engaged, or actively disengaged–is based on worker responses to 12 workplace elements with proven linkages to performance outcomes, including productivity, customer service, quality, retention, safety, and profit.

"Engaged employees are involved in and enthusiastic about their work," according to Gallup researchers. "Those who are not engaged are satisfied with their workplaces, but are not emotionally connected to them–and these employees are less likely to put in discretionary effort. The actively disengaged workers are emotionally disconnected from their work and workplace and jeopardize the performance of their teams."
