Rally Protests $1 Million Cut in Renewable Energy Fund

Friday, June 04, 2010

A State House rally yesterday protested a proposed cut of $1 million in the state Renewable Energy Fund and urged the Rhode Island House to restore the money. Rep. David Segal offered an amendment to put the money back in - which was defeated later in the day. "I know that my constituents are outraged that the money they put in for energy efficiency and green energy is now being swiped by the General Assembly," Segal said. "This $1 million is not ours for the taking, and is of marginal concern in a budget of $8 billion."

A spokesman for House Speaker Gordon Fox pointed out that the fund still has a $2.5 million surplus.

The fund is comprised of revenue from the conservation fee residents pay on their electric bills.
