Providence School Board member Melissa Malone has resigned—amid a time of turmoil, including the terminations of all teachers and the planned closures of several schools.
Providence Mayor Angel Taveras yesterday announced he is actively searching for a replacement.
The Providence School Board Nominating commission has begun accepting School Board applications to fill the vacant seat.

“The school board plays an enormously important role in shaping the future of public education in Providence by providing leadership and decision-making that broadly impacts the everyday experience of our students,” said Mayor Angel Taveras. “Becoming a member of the School Board is one of the most direct ways that a Providence resident can get involved and join the fight to transform our schools.”
After all the applications have been received, the Nominating Commission will submit a pool of finalists to Mayor Taveras, who will then choose the nominee. Once approved by the city council, the new school board member will be sworn into office in early May.
The application deadline is 4 p.m.on Friday, April 1, 2011. The application can be accessed electronically from the City’s website, www.providenceri.com, or picked up and returned to the Office of Neighborhood services on the 2nd floor of City Hall.
Melissa Malone could not be reached for comment yesterday.
