Providence City Council President Supports Charter School
Thursday, June 09, 2011
City Council President Michael Solomon yesterday announced his support for Achievement First, a new mayoral academy which would serve Cranston and Providence students.
“Despite the great challenges we face as a city, it is critical we not lose focus of the greatest responsibility we share as a community: ensuring the children of Providence are given the very best public school options we can provide,” Solomon wrote in a letter to George Caruolo, the chairman of the Board of Regents. “At a time when Providence is facing the specter of four school closures, it is more important than ever that we work to increase the choices Providence families have in finding high quality schools for their children.”
Solomon also noted that the expansion of public charter schools is critical to keeping federal Race to the Top funds in Rhode Island.
