video: Potholes Plague Providence
Tuesday, February 01, 2011
Motorists beware, the streets of Providence are pockmarked by the near-constant freeze-and-thaw accompanying this winter's heavy snowfall and frigid temperatures. Potholes over three-feet wide and nearly six-inches deep are no uncommon sight, but perhaps the biggest holes are in the city's road-maintenance funding.
According to Kevin Roderick of LA Observed, the cost of filling a pothole ranges from $5.60 in Los Angeles, CA to just over $50 in Overland Park, Kansas. The price to fix a car that has been damaged by even a small pothole is significantly higher, however -- in the $500-800 range, according to Albert Latour of Latour Auto Body. The state and municipalities are usually liable for damage caused by potholes, but even after a claim in filed, the maximum amount you can receive is $300.
Providence Mayor Angel Taveras has said that maintaining roads is a tip priority for his administration. Anyone with concerns about specific potholes on city streets should contact the Office of Neighborhood Services at (401) 421-2489.
