NEW: Poll—Most Support More Charter Schools

Monday, June 13, 2011

A new poll released by the Rhode Island Campaign for Achievement now shows that the public in Providence and Cranston overwhelmingly support increasing the number of charter schools in the area.

Seven in ten of those surveyed supported the expansion. That support is even higher in Providence, where 79 percent support increasing the number of charts. In the western part of Providence County, which encompasses Cranston, 64 percent expressed support.

“The community forums on the Achievement First application have not been indicative of residents’ true opinions,” said Maryellen Butke, RI-CAN Executive Director. “It is crucial that the Board of Regents consider the true breadth of community support when making their decision about the fate of Achievement First in Rhode Island and not just the loud cries of a small but well-organized minority. This poll is evidence of an authentic majority demanding better choices for their kids.”

The poll was released amid ongoing public debate about the proposed opening of the Achievement First charter school, which would accept students from Cranston and Providence.

The poll was conducted by Global Strategy Group and was based on a telephone survey of 601 Rhode Island voters, with an oversample of 100 African American and Latino votes. The margin of error was 4 percent.

Wow. Talk about a push poll. I don't know what's worse..that fact that you are pushing this as authentic or the fact that you think people are stupid enough to buy it. Did you even check the dates on the poll? Early March.....before all of the news stories about this issue...C'mon...seriously Maryellen?

Providence Country...which includes Cranston...yes, and how many other communities?

You folks are trying WAY too hard on the sell job...I wonder why that is? Is it perhaps because you have read the language of the RTTT app and realize you are missing one crucial element?

Any Rhode Island poll, in which self-identified Democrats are only 44% of the sample, is cherry-picked to over-represent Republicans and Independents.
