Ordinance Protecting Hotel Workers Holds Up in Court
Tuesday, December 06, 2011
The U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit last week affirmed Chief Judge Mary Lisi’s decision to uphold a Providence ordinance that gives hotel workers a right to their jobs for 90 days after a change in ownership or if a department is sub-contracted.
The hotels and the hospitality industry attempted to argue that the legislation violates employers’ rights under the U.S. Constitution and the National Labor Relations Act.
“Hotel workers through-out the city should applaud this decision and the Ordinance. It will provide stability to the workers and their families and this important industry which provides so many jobs to people working in our Capital city”, stated Chris Cook, UniteHere Local 217 VP and an employee of the Westin Hotel.
