DEVELOPING: O’Donnell is Expected to be Named Supt of State Police

In the worst secret in Rhode Island politics, former RI State Police Deputy Superintendent and presently US Marshall for Rhode Island, Stephen O'Donnell is expected to be named as the successor to Brendan Doherty.
O'Donnell's appointment is expected to be announced at a press conference tomorrow at the State House. The key question for O'Donnell, who served as the number two to Doherty prior to being appointed to the US Marshall's office, is will he be willing to support Governor Lincoln Chafee's policy to rescind the E-Verify program.

He joined the State Police in 1986 and has risen through the ranks to his current rank and position. Lt. Col. O’Donnell was a patrolman with the North Kingstown, Rhode Island, Police Department from 1984-1986, and was a Correctional Officer with the Rhode Island Department of Corrections from 1983-1984. He was awarded a master’s degree from Salve Regina University in 1993 and a bachelor of science degree from the University of New Haven in 1983.
Mike Trainor refused to confirm the appointment and calls to O'Donnell were not returned.
