Ocean State Action held a rally yesterday in front of the headquarters of the Greater Providence Chamber of Commerce to call for higher taxes on corporations and the wealthy.

The rally featured small business owners and local employees airing grievances of how they were treated unfairly in favor of big business. Celsa Delbozo, a janitor for Amica, noted how the insurance giant hired an irresponsible janitorial contractor, in effect firing the previous employees. Chris Cook, a Westin employee, spoke of how - even though JP Morgan Chase Bank was bailed out with tax dollars - they continue to “nickel and dime” costumers with copious fees.

“Simply complaining about taxes, and complaining about Chaffee’s tax and complaining that government ought to be less expensive, isn’t really a way forward,” stated Tom Sgouros, a tax expert for OSA.

'The Patriot Tax'

Ocean State Action recommends passing The Patriot Tax, which would place a 2% surtax on incomes over $500,000, along with closing corporate tax loopholes. Kate Brock, the executive Director of Ocean State Action, called for corporations to be “good neighbors” and pay their fair share of taxes when they are utilizing the state’s infrastructure - the roads on which they drive, the public schools which educates their workers.

The rally was billed as a counter-protest to the Tea Party rally held last Friday, which was held to oppose tax increases.

Sgouros pointed out that in the past when taxes on the rich have been higher, the economy has thrived. He goes on to say that he would take the economy of 1995 over the current despite the higher taxes.

On Chafee’s sales tax, the OSA says it could be a vehicle for raising revenue, but suggests the governor instead look at reforming personal income tax.
