Nightclub Stabbing Gets Tropicana’s License Revoked by City of Providence
Friday, December 09, 2016
The Providence Board of Licenses voted to revoke the license for the restaurant and bar Tropicana on Chalkstone Avenue, after a stabbing occurred at the club November 25.
In a letter addressed to the restaurant/bar dated December 8, the board stated that due to the “extensive violation history of the licensee” and previous fines assessed, and the danger to the community posed by Tropicana being ‘so severe,’ that it is revoking the license held by the licensee at that location.
The decision marks the latest at the Board of Licenses, which has recently dealt with addressing the operations of an after-hours club in Providence, as well as a spate of violence and drugs at city clubs this summer.

The board also noted in its letter that it found that altercations had taken place both inside and outside the club leading up to the stabbing— but that the club owner and her daughter denied any incident taking place inside the club,
“The Board of Licenses has the important responsibility of ensuring both the economic growth of the city and the quality of life in our neighborhoods. In recent months, there has been a concerted effort by the City Council to improve the board’s operations. Today’s decision to revoke Tropicana’s license is a sign of progress,” said Providence City Council Majority Whip Jo-Ann Ryan
“Tropicana opened under the guise of a neighborhood restaurant, but operates as a nightclub. This has had a distressing impact on the surrounding neighborhood. The establishment has accrued numerous violations, and its recent stabbing is incredibly disturbing. We cannot allow this kind of behavior to occur in any of our neighborhoods, and I firmly support the Board’s decision to revoke its license,” continued Ryan.
Tropicana is allowed to appeal the decision with the State Board of Licenses.
