NEW: Women’s Group Protests Doherty Fundraiser
Friday, March 09, 2012
Planned Parenthood supporters held a protest Thursday outside of a Brendan Doherty fundraiser at the Hope Club in Providence.
The protest was held on International Women’s Day to acknowledge the role of women not just in Rhode Island but in the rest of the country. The two congressmen in town to support Doherty have supported legislation on numerous occasions that would have upended support for women’s access to family planning and healthcare services, the group said in a news release.
“We want to send a strong message to Congress and those running for public office, like Mr. Doherty, that women are watching and we will vote. Attacking women’s health, undermining access to birth control and coming between a woman and the private decisions she makes with her doctor and her family is not acceptable,” said Judy Tabar, President & CEO of Planned Parenthood of Southern New England.
