NEW: Westin Workers, Management End Labor Dispute

The drawn-out standoff between workers and management at the Westin Hotel in downtown Providence has finally come to an end.

The union, UNITE HERE Local 217, announced this evening its members had approved a contract with the hotel—after a year of court hearings, pickets, and political rallies.

Providence Mayor Angel Taveras praised the new deal, in a statement that the union released:

“I commend the workers and management at the Westin Hotel, who after a very long journey have negotiated a new contract that brings this labor dispute to an end. I am grateful for the opportunity to lend my support to the process and expedite a negotiation to create a work environment that is fair and equitable for all,” Taveras said.

He added: “This new contract recognizes those who work tirelessly to make hotel experiences exceptional—individuals who are critical to creating a thriving hospitality industry throughout all of Rhode Island. I thank both workers and management for finding their way to this important agreement.”

The contract bars further subcontracting, mandates a minimum number of full-time jobs, and restores lost wages over time as well as health care and pension benefits, according to the union. The contract also creates a long-term revenue sharing program between workers and the hotel.

The new contract takes effect tomorrow.
