NEW: Sweeney Stepping Down as GOP Executive Director

Wednesday, March 21, 2012

Republican Party executive director Patrick Sweeney has announced that he is leaving the post at the end of the month, according to a press release that went out today.

Citing the financial and time requirements associated with starting a family, Sweeney, a lawyer, explained that he needed to focus on legal work, no matter how much he has enjoyed his tenure.

During his term one year run as executive director, Sweeney player a role two transitions at the Chair’s position, most recently helping Mark Zaccaria find his bearings after his election to the post last December. He also worked closely with Ken McKay, who resigned as chairman last November.

“What a year this has been. I want to first thank Ken and Mark for allowing me the opportunity to lead our efforts during these trying times," Sweeney said. "They have put all of their efforts and resources into resurrecting the RIGOP here in Rhode Island. Though I must step down, our work is not done yet. We have seven more months to push forward and let voters in Rhode Island know why they need Republicans in the General Assembly to look after their wallets. I look forward to transitioning our new ED and assisting our candidates in getting elected this November."

Members of the RI State Central Committee are asked to recommend candidates who they feel have the political acumen and administrative experience to serve as RI GOP Executive Director. Candidates are asked to contact Chairman Mark Zaccaria at state party headquarters to indicate their interest and begin the application process.

“That’s an aggressive timetable.” Zaccaria acknowledged. “We may not be able to finish up by then but we should be well underway to making this transition orderly and routine, too.”
