NEW: Supporters Really Against Carter School Closure

Friday, July 27, 2012

Supporters of the Academy for Career Exploration (ACE) testified Thursday in opposition to Commissioner Deborah Gist recommendation to close the struggling charter school.

“Looking back, I wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for the teachers and administrators who dedicated their time, every day, to help me succeed,” said John Serpas, a 2007 graduate of the Textron Chamber of Commerce Academy, now known as the Academy for Career Exploration, and a 2011 graduate of Bryant University. “I know how important this school is to everyone, especially the students, which is why all of us came out to show our support, despite summer vacation.”

Supporters say the school has demonstrated consistent growth in several areas, but critics say student’s math scores have plummeted. Z ero 11th graders were proficient in math, according to 2011 NECAP scores

“ACE has the capacity to succeed – we have already demonstrated this in many areas, and we will strive for student achievement in all academic areas,” said Paul Racicot, Board Chair of the Academy for Career Exploration. “Our school is educating and graduating successful students who have a solid foundation to achieve their career and life goals. Shutting down our school isn’t the solution.”

"ACE has the capacity to succeed – we have already demonstrated this in many areas, and we will strive for student achievement in all academic areas,” said Paul Racicot, Board Chair of the Academy for Career Exploration. Words such as "capacity" an "strive" speak volumes. Clearly the school isn't close to fulfilling its obligations to its students. We can't afford to have an entire cohort of students with this type of failure rate. Shut it down.

In that case, I believe about 15 more schools in Providence would fit the bill. Shut em all down. Use the same measuring stick and shut them all down at once.
