NEW: Steny Hoyer Visiting RI Friday

Thursday, July 05, 2012

Congressman Steny Hoyer (D-MD), the Democratic Whip of the U.S. House of Representatives, will join Congressman Jim Langevin (D-RI) in the Ocean State on Friday, July 6, 2012, to meet with Rhode Islanders about key priorities for growing the state and national economy.

Beginning at Noon at New England Institute of Technology’s East Greenwich Campus, Hoyer will join career and technical education (CTE) high school students, teachers and administrators for the next stop on Langevin’s Rhode Island Skilled Economy (RISE) Tour, launched earlier this year to advocate initiatives that can best train our current and future workforce for jobs in the 21st century economy. Participants will discuss the need to support CTE programs to help ensure students are college- and career-ready. The event coincides with proposals, including a recently-released blueprint by the Obama Administration, for the reauthorization of the major legislation dealing with CTE funding. This discussion is open to press.

Langevin and Hoyer, who is the second highest-ranking Democrat in the House, will then visit Electric Boat’s Quonset facility at 1pm for a tour that will highlight the benefits of the peerless Virginia Class Submarines built there. As a member of the House Armed Services Committee, Langevin has led efforts to show the national security value of the boats and gain broad support in the House of Representatives for increasing, and now maintaining, production, which has resulted in job creation in Rhode Island. While the tour cannot be open to the press, Langevin and Hoyer will be available for comment at the facility’s front gate on Dillabur Avenue at 1:40pm.
