Carnevale, who has at least three arrests in his past, is being charged with sexual assault following a July 28 incident in Johnston.

Gordon, a Republican, did not wish to weigh in directly on Carnevale's situation, but he questioned whether his Democratic colleague will receive the same treatment he received.

"I have no particular comment on Rep. Carnevale's indictment other than that he is afforded due process under the law," Gordon said. "However, I am awaiting the Speaker, Governor, Rep. Newberry, and Rep. Edwards to call for Rep. Carnevale to resign his office. Will Brian Newberry take to the airwaves and declare to Carnevale's constituents that "he is no longer able to represent them" and that he will personally 'recruit and find someone to primary him?' Will John Edwards solicit petition signatures asking for Carnevale to step down, and present them to the Speaker? After all, these were the actions taken against me regarding old traffic violations that were subsequently dismissed."

Gordon continued: "If these things do not occur, it is proof positive of the culture of favoritism and cronyism in the State House."
