NEW: State Rep. Candidate Did Not Violate Hatch Act

Democratic State Rep. candidate and Woonsocket firefighter Stephen Casey did not violate the Hatch Act when he chose to run for office, the Office of Special Counsel said today.

State Rep. Jon Brien, who lost to Casey in last month’s District 50 Democratic primary, filed a complain several weeks ago charging that Casey was subject to the Hatch Act because the Woonsocket Fire Department received $300,000 in federal funds for training purposes earlier this year.

The Hatch Act prohibits those who are paid with, or have control over, federal funds from running for office.
