NEW: Senate Bill Would Reduce Mayoral Academy Funding
Wednesday, March 21, 2012
Education reformers are expressing outrage at a new Senate bill that would reduce funding for mayoral academies in Rhode Island.
Senate Bill 2709 would reduce funding by 25% for all mayoral academies, which would essentially eliminate their ability to operate, according to Blackstone Valley Prep executive director Jeremy Chiappetta.
“If you look at the NECAP scores for Blackstone Valley Prep Middle you will see amazing growth in just one school year," he said. "The same can be true at our elementary schools where last year 100% of our scholars (they work too hard to just be called students or kids) achieved the state set benchmark for literacy."
