NEW: Seat Belt Law Now in Effect

If you plan to drive this Independence Day holiday, you now have a new incentive to wear your seat belt.

Before this month, state law required that all drivers wear their seat belts. But under the old law, police could not stop a driver for the sole reason that he or she was not wearing a seat belt—there had to be another moving violation for an officer to pull someone over. Now that’s changed, thanks to a bill passed by the General Assembly and signed into law by Governor Lincoln Chafee at the end of last week.

Under the new law, police can stop you for not wearing a seat belt, on offense that carries a $75 fine.
