Two leaders of the Rhode Island Statewide Coalition have been honored by a national journalists’ association for their efforts to increase transparency in Rhode Island government.

RISC Founder Harry Staley and Executive Director Harriet Lloyd have been jointly named recipients of the 2011 American Society of News Editors (ASNE) Local Heroes Award.

The annual Awards are announced each year from Washington, DC during “Sunshine Week,” March 14-18. Sunshine Week is held annually to encourage discourse concerning the importance of open government and freedom of information.

GoLocalProv first reported last fall that RISC had successfully pushed to get the General Assembly to put votes online in real-time.

Harry Staley and Harriet Lloyd, a father-daughter team, earned second place in the national contest for the RISC effort to force greater transparency in the General Assembly vote reporting system.
Their efforts—and the decision to make General Assembly votes available online in real-time—was first reported by GoLocalProv.

“RISC is proud and humbled to be recognized in this way by this distinguished group of newspaper editors for the effort we have made to give the Rhode Island public the access they deserve to their elected body,” Staley said.

The Staley family founded RISC in 2003 as a non-partisan business and citizen taxpayer advocacy organization, dedicated to the principals of local government transparency, fiscal accountability and tax reform, and educational reform of the Rhode Island public school system.

“It is very gratifying to see RISC honored by this esteemed Society of journalists on an issue which I believe is front and center for the ongoing effort to bring greater accountability by the General Assembly to the Rhode Island public. I am personally extremely proud of our entire coalition for their dedication to the wider RISC mission of informing the ordinary taxpayer citizens of our state about their local government,” Lloyd said.
