NEW: RIC Student Wins Prestigious John H. Chafee Award

Providence resident and senior at Rhode Island College, Mariama Kurbally, will receive the John H. Chafee award. This award recognizes an exemplary RIC undergraduate student who has demonstrated involvement and leadership in public and community service.

At RIC, Kurbally founded the student organization L.I.F.E. (Live. Inspire. Fight. Educate. She also volunteers for the North Providence Youth Alliance, an AIDS Project R.I. campus liaison and an intern for Smithfield representative Tom Winfield. She is majoring in Political Science and Justice Studies.

Jane Fusco, Director of News and Public Relations/College Spokesperson told GoLocalProv, "Ms. Kurbally's service to Rhode Island College and the community is truly an inspiration to all students, and to anyone interested in serving the public, in lasting ways, as exemplified by the namesake of the award. These are the kind of people who strive to make the world a better place now and in the future."

The award will be presented by the former governor’s son, Lincoln Chafee, the current R.I. governor, at a State House ceremony on Friday, Sept. 16 at 1:30 p.m.
