NEW: RI Charter Schools See Huge Increase in Applications

Tuesday, March 04, 2014

Charter public school applications for the upcoming school year far outweighed the available openings, according to state held blind lotteries held this week. Applications for Rhode Island’s 22 charter schools, including the 17 member schools of Rhode Island League of Charter Schools, Achievement First, Blackstone Valley Prep and three schools that have received preliminary approval from the R.I. Board of Education, totaled more than 11,800 to fill less than 1,300 open slots.

“Lottery day is an exciting day for many families, but also serves as a reminder of the unmet demand for more valuable public school options in our state,” said Steve Nardelli, executive director of the Rhode Island League of Charter Schools. “All students should have the opportunity to attend an excellent public school, and whether that choice is a traditional or charter public school is a choice left up to each family.”

Lottery day is a term used to describe the state-imposed date that charter public schools had to determine their student bodies for the upcoming school year. By law, each charter public school is required to conduct a blind lottery when the number of applicants exceeds the number of available spaces.
