NEW: RI 8th-Biggest Spender on Education in the Country

Rhode Island is the 8th-highest spending state in the country when it comes to public education, according to a report released today by 24/7 Wall St., an online source for US and global equity investors.

New York topped the ranking, followed by New Jersey, Alaska, Vermont, and Wyoming, in descending order. Connecticut ranked 6th and Massachusetts followed at 7th.

24/7 reviewed Census data on the amount states spend per student on education including teacher salaries, and compared it with information on metrics such as graduation rates and standardized test results reported by the National Center for Education Statistics, which is part of the US Department of Education. From there, the rankings were created.

Rhode Island: Number 8

According to 24/7's analysis, Rhode Island spends $13,707 per pupil on education, placing it 8th in the nation. "About $1,800 of this – more than any other state – goes to student support," according to the authors of the report, "which includes counseling, social work, and medical care. 24/7 cited Rhode Island being the only state in the country without a defined formula for determining how much funding a school receives.
